Man with past sex offenses accused of raping child

Man with past sex offenses accused of raping child

A 45-year-old man, who has an extensive criminal history involving crimes of a sexual nature, received a $1 million bond Thursday after the Thomasville Police Department alleged he raped a child.

Robert Lee Ingram Jr., of 119-B South Street, Thomasville, has been charged with felony first-degree rape. He has been given a Feb. 26 court date in Thomasville District Court.

The TPD is accusing Ingram of raping an 8-year-old girl Jan. 2, according to a press release. He was arrested Thursday without incident when officers executed a search warrant at his residence.

"Ingram was a friend of the family and was entrusted to watch the child at his residence while the parents were at work," said Det. Chet Jarrell. "The arrest came after a culmination of evidence gained from a forensic interview and a medical exam of the child."

According to court records, Ingram only has been convicted in Davidson County of traffic violations, including a driving while impaired conviction in 2003. The N.C. Department of Public Safety website, however, shows he has been convicted in Guilford County of failure to report address as a sex offender in 2000, second-degree rape in 1993, second-degree sexual offense in 1993, crimes against nature in 1993 and indecent liberties with a child in 1993. He served five years in prison and was released in 1998, followed by the five years of probation for the failure to report address as a sex offender.
