Medical Marijuana:Good Voters Do Get Arrested
by Scott T. Moorey
Hot Topic Medical Marijuana: Back in January, in a tight vote, the Florida Supreme Court ruled four votes to three that the citizen initiative allowing the use of Medical Marijuana could be on the state ballot. It had met all of the requirements for a Constitutional Amendment. http://www.floridasupremecourt.org/pub_info/documents/sc13-2006.pdf
Because of this, in November you and other registered voters throughout Florida will have a say in whether or not Florida becomes one of a growing number of states that permits medical marijuana.
According to a summary of the amendment from Florida Department of State, Division of Elections, the Amendment
"Allows the medical use of marijuana for individuals with debilitating diseases as determined by a licensed Florida physician. Allows caregivers to assist patients' medical use of marijuana. The Department of Health shall register and regulate centers that produce and distribute marijuana for medical purposes and shall issue identification cards to patients and caregivers. Applies only to Florida law. Does not authorize violations of federal law or any non-medical use, possession or production of marijuana." http://election.dos.state.fl.us/initiatives/initdetail.asp?account=50438&seqnum=2
November seems a long time away. Remember though, not being a presidential election, there is less participation by the voters. Will those against the initiative vote in force? or will those for it be sure to get their supporters registered and voting? The word needs to get out.
It used to be you had to go to the polls to cast your ballot or vote absentee if you were out-of-town or physically unable to go to the polls; now anyone can easily vote by mail.
Early voting is also an option that eases the process.
But you have to be registered to vote. Do so today so you can have your say on this important initiative. http://www.leeelections.com/content.php?l=240
