Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation officer arrested on underage sex charges

Charlotte County detectives arrested a Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission officer Wednesday after detectives say he had sex with a 14-year-old girl multiple times. John Michael Hoover, 37, faces two counts of lewd battery on a 14-year-old girl, according to a Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office release.

On July 27, Charlotte County deputies saw Hoover’s FWC truck parked at an abandoned house in the Port Charlotte area. Hoover then came out of the house with a 14-year-old girl. Hoover, who was in uniform, told deputies he caught the girl in the house with another male. He said the male fled the scene. Hoover said he would handle the investigation and he did not want help from Charlotte County deputies.

On Jan. 3, the sheriff’s office received new information pertaining to the same 14-year-old girl. Following a criminal investigation, the sheriff’s office developed probable cause to believe Hoover had sex with her on two occasions.

The sheriff’s office issued an arrested warrant for Hoover, and he turned himself in at 4 p.m. Wednesday. He was transported to Charlotte County Jail and released on a $10,000 bond.
