Man arrested for DUI in sheriff's parking lot

A suspect in a hit and run DUI crash made it easy for deputies to find him after he followed a witness to the crash - right into the parking lot of the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say the man, later identified as 53-year-old Barry K. Greenwood of Fort Myers, struck a vehicle stopped at a traffic light at US-41 and Alico Roadaround 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Greenwood allegedly left the scene, but was followed by a witness who was on the phone with deputies. He stopped behind a strip mall to check the damage to his white Ford F-150, and the witness was able to give the sheriff's office all the information about the vehicle.

Greenwood reportedly noticed he was being followed, then decided to start following the witness, according to the arrest report. His driving didn't improve, though, as the witness said he was swerving all over the road as he tailed them.

The witness pulled into the parking lot of the sheriff's office headquarters on Six Mile Cypress Parkway, and Greenwood followed.

Then he apparently realized where he was, and tried backing out, hitting one of the security gates in the process.

A deputy caught up with him at the front gate.

The arrest report says Greenwood smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and had a hard time keeping his balance. He also didn't do very well on the field sobriety tests, according to deputies.

After being handcuffed and placed in the patrol car, the arrest report says Greenwood got violent, kicking at the doors and windows and screaming at the deputy.

He's charged with DUI with property damage, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage and driving with a suspended license.

Greenwood was taken to the Lee County Jail.
