Sex Crime Offender dresses up as clown on Halloween

| Nov 6, 2013 | Sex Crime

EL CAJON, Calif. – The sex offender who was arrested on Halloween night while trying to slip candy into children’s trick-or-treat bags in Ramona pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of failing to register as a sex offender.

Danny Shaw, 29, looked down during his brief arraignment by video in El Cajon.

Shaw, who was convicted of a sex offense in Eugene, Ore. in 2003, has not been charged with any crimes against children in Ramona, where he went to a Chamber of Commerce event called Trick-or-Treat on Main Street dressed as a clown with his face painted white with fake blood splattered on it.

Deputy District Attorney Derek Grilz told 10News the investigation into Shaw’s actions is still under investigation and more charges could be filed.

Grilz revealed this is not the first time Shaw has neglected to follow court orders to register his address with law enforcement. In 2005, he was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender, which is a felony.

10News checked court documents and learned Shaw not only pleaded guilty and was sentenced, he also filed a motion to have a strike removed from his record. The strike was removed because the offense was not deemed to be one of the more serious sex crimes and because Shaw was in therapy.

Shaw now faces the possibility of six years, if convicted of failing to register.

A woman who attended his hearing, claiming to be a family member, said the case has been blown out of proportion, but declined to say why. abc10
