Tis the Season for DUI Crackdown

47 DUI Arrests in Sonoma County Since Friday

Thirteen local law enforcement agencies are involved in the "Avoid the 13" DUI-crackdown campaign.

By Bay City News Service

There were 47 arrests for driving under the influence in Sonoma County over the weekend, the head of the county's Avoid the 13 campaign said.

The Avoid the 13's winter campaign began Friday with six DUI arrests at a DUI checkpoint in Sonoma and two more Saturday night at a checkpoint in Santa Rosa, Petaluma police Sgt. Ken Savano said.

Santa Rosa police also responded to seven more DUIs within a 15-hour period outside the checkpoint. Between 5 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday, there were three DUI-related crashes and four more drivers were stopped for DUIs in Santa Rosa, Savano said.

The 13 law enforcement agencies in the Avoid the 13 campaign have reduced alcohol-related collision deaths and injuries by 73 percent since 2008, Savano said.

"Despite this significant reduction, DUI remains a serious problem in Sonoma County as evidenced by the number of DUI collisions and arrests this past weekend," Savano said.

The 47 DUI arrests do not include 12 people who were arrested for DUI warrants over the weekend, Savano said.

The 12 arrests for DUI warrants happened between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday in Marin and Sonoma counties when officers and deputies attempted to serve 65 warrants, Savano said.
