Sex Offender Offered $50 for Sex?

'You're still approaching juveniles,' Broward judge tells sex offender

'You're still approaching juveniles,' Broward judge tells sex offender

A Broward County judge criticized a sex offender Tuesday following the suspect's arrest on suspicion he drove up to a boy and offered him $50 for oral sex.

"The court believes you represent a danger to the community," Judge John "Jay" Hurley told Craig Baker, 44, of Lauderdale Lakes. "You're a sex offender. You're still approaching juveniles for sex. Fortunately, this juvenile was able to get away from you."

According to a Broward sheriff's report, Baker on Monday was in a gray minivan in the 3900 block of Northwest 41st Street when he crossed paths with a 16-year-old boy who was walking home. He asked the teen for directions and then offered him the money for oral sex, the report said.

The boy declined and continued walking home. He was followed by Baker, who identified himself as "Craig Bates," the Sheriff's Office said.

An alert deputy recognized the similarly sounding name and knew Baker to drive the same vehicle and reside in the neighborhood.

When an investigator arrived at Baker's home, Baker told authorities that he had been in the area near the teen's home while doing laundry, the report said.

He then admitted to asking the boy for oral sex, it said. Baker was charged with criminal attempt to solicit in the case, officials said.

According to Florida Department of Law Enforcement records, Baker was convicted of lewd and lascivious battery on a victim 12 to 15 years old in 2002 and in 2006. Those were qualifying offenses that led to his sex offender designation, FDLE said.

During Baker's first-appearance court hearing, Hurley ordered Baker held on a $250,000 bond for the incident. But the judge revoked his bond on a pending cause for failing to report as a sex offender and ultimately ordered Baker held in jail without bond.
