NEW DELHI: An Afghan national, ferrying drugs for an international cartel, was arrested with 4kg cocaine worth Rs 20 crore in the international market.

Ahmad Jawid alias Nabi (46) was arrested by a team-led by DCP special cell, Sanjeev Yadav, on February 10. Cops said high quality cocaine and heroin from Afghanistan were being smuggled to India in the garb of import of semi-precious stones. They claimed the cartel was also operational in South America and North Africa.

“In the last couple of months, our team was investigating different modules of international drug cartels which are active in Delhi. Interrogation of various arrested persons revealed that apart from heroin, Afghanistan-based drug lords are also trafficking cocaine,” said Yadav.

Police said Nabi was living in Old Delhi for the past couple of months and was locating prospective buyers for a cocaine consignment. “On February 10, we got information that Nabi would be coming near Vikas Kunj on Outer Ring Road to provide a sample of cocaine to a prospective buyer. A trap was laid and he was nabbed with 300gm cocaine,” said Yadav.

During interrogation, Nabi disclosed that he had come to deliver the sample to Tony, a Nigerian national, on the directions of his handler Gafoor. “He further revealed that he had kept the remaining drugs in his hotel room in Old Delhi. We conducted a raid and recovered 3.7kg cocaine,” said special commissioner of police, (Special Cell), S N Shrivastava.

“Nabi has also disclosed that high quality drugs are being pushed into India by this cartel through the Uri and Punjab borders under the garb of semi-precious stones trade. Efforts are being made to locate the other conduits of this syndicate,” Shrivastava added.
