Southwest Florida Boating – what a way to spend a day! Labor Day, is considered the last long holiday weekend of summer. Even though Labor Day has come and gone, plans are still being made every dry weekend to enjoy our waterways.
Remember that when you’re driving a boat, you have the same responsibilities you do when you’re driving a car – not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A DUI on the roadway is called a BUI on the water.
The U.S. Coast Guard Boating Safety Division reports the following:
- A boat operator is likely to become impaired more quickly than a driver, drink for drink.
- The penalties for BUI can include large fines, revocation of operator privileges and serious jail terms.
- The use of alcohol is involved in about a third of all recreational boating fatalities.
If you’ll be drinking, make sure your weekend plans end on a positive note and designate a non-drinking driver for your boat, not forgetting to designate one to drive your car home from the dock. Keep boating happy.
