According to Fort Myers law enforcement officials and others, police often serve warrants early in the morning because most people are asleep then. It makes it easier for officers to make arrests when suspects are sleepy. Officials find that in predawn raids, there is typically less resistance than in operations carried out later in the day.
That might well be why authorities recently carried out a predawn operation far north of us. Officials in the Jacksonville area said that the purpose of Operation Gator Bait was to arrest 16 Putnam County people suspected of drug trafficking crimes.
The drug and vice unit of the county sheriff’s office said it carried out a four-month investigation before warrants were issued and the recent raid carried out. A total of 11 people were taken into custody in Operation Gator Bait, with police searching for the remaining suspects.
Undercover officers said they made multiple drug purchases from suspects, including cocaine, methamphetamines, heroin and other opiates.
According to a TV station news report, the ages of those arrested are from 24 to 52. Outstanding warrants remain for suspects who range in age from 25 to 47, police said.
One of the at-large suspects is sought in connection with an ongoing murder investigation.
