A Florida man might have thought he had it all worked out when he called the police to report a mugging. In an effort to hide his drug crimes from his wife, he landed behind bars on other charges. The man whose plans backfired is a 35-year-old resident of DeLand.
On a recent Tuesday, the man called the police to report being robbed. He claimed two men robbed him of $425 while he was at a gas station. Police say he elaborated in his description of the alleged robbers, giving their heights and even describing the shoes they wore. Police immediately launched a search for the scoundrels.
When the search yielded nothing, officers looked at the video surveillance footage on the gas station’s security system. From this, they learned that the man went in and out the store at the gas station without being robbed. At that time, the man decided to come clean and admitted that he made the call to report a fake robbery to avoid his wife finding out that he had actually purchased cocaine with that money.
While trying to stay in his wife’s good books, this Florida man might have managed to avoid being charged with drug crimes, but he is now facing charges of perjury in an official capital proceeding. Reportedly, he also violated grand theft-related probation, so he is being held without bond. The most logical step for him would likely be to secure the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney who might save him from the wrath of the law — but maybe not from the scorn of his wife.
