High-speed chase in Florida leads to drug charges

A high-speed chase in Florida ended when the stolen car crashed and rolled over. The occupants were medically cleared at the scene, and a search of the vehicle led to several drug charges. The incident occurred on a recent Tuesday when deputies in Polk County noticed a suspected stolen car as it pulled into McDonald's. Reportedly, the driver of the stolen vehicle backed up and rammed into the patrol car when he saw the flashing emergency lights behind him.

Deputies report that the driver smashed into an unoccupied parked car to clear an escape route before speeding away. A chase at speeds allegedly exceeding 100 mph ensued. The vehicle crashed and landed on its roof, and after removing an 18-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, deputies claim to have found methamphetamine paraphernalia in the car. The woman already had an outstanding arrest warrant,

An affidavit indicates that the man claimed to have grabbed the wheel after another driver jumped out at an intersection to flee on foot. However, deputies say the woman passenger confirmed in an affidavit that the man was the driver. Both occupants of the vehicle were charged with possession of meth and drug paraphernalia and nonviolent arrest resistance. The driver was also charged with grand theft of an automobile, leaving a crash scene after causing property damage, reckless driving and more.

In other similar cases in Florida, most defendants who face drug charges retain the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. A lawyer can protect the rights of accused individuals during police questioning and interviews. Legal counsel will examine the affidavits, the charges, the procedures used by law enforcement, and other relevant information before devising a defense strategy to achieve the best possible outcome for the defendant.
