Charges on drug crimes and other offenses follow crosswalk crash

Investigators are puzzled by the actions of a Florida driver after a pedestrian was struck in a crosswalk in Broward County last month. The driver now faces several charges for drug crimes and other offenses. Officials say the incident was recorded on surveillance cameras, and this led to the driver's surrender to authorities.

Based on the surveillance footage, the 36-year-old driver of an SUV came up to a crosswalk and noticed a pedestrian who was about to cross the street. The driver allegedly stopped to allow the pedestrian to pass, but then proceeded to do what seems not only reckless and cruel behavior but also bizarre. Officers say footage indicates that he pulled off and struck the pedestrian as he crossed in front of the vehicle.

After hitting the pedestrian, the driver drove off without stopping to check on the injured pedestrian. Authorities say the impact fractured the pedestrian's leg. The sheriff's office says the surveillance footage was clear, and it led to the identification of the driver. Further reports indicate several previous arrests of this driver in Broward County. This time he faces multiple charges that include drug crimes, probation violation and battery.

Anyone in Florida who is accused of criminal offenses can benefit significantly from having a lawyer in his or her corner throughout ensuing legal proceedings. In this case, legal counsel can examine the charges for irregularities. There is no indication of how drug crimes can be justified if the police had no contact with the driver at the scene, and the arrest took place several weeks after the accident. Given the circumstances, the fact that no hit-and-run charges were filed may also be relevant to the charges that were filed and the police version of what occurred.
