Summertime is on the horizon, which means it is almost time to celebrate Independence Day. While your Fourth of July may be full of barbecues and fireworks, there is a high risk of it involving car accident injuries too. Did you know that the Fourth of July is the deadliest holiday in America?

Driving during Independence Day is dangerous because of an increase in traffic, tourists unfamiliar with roads, intoxication and motorcycles. Keep the following safety guidelines in mind to avoid an auto collision during this patriotic holiday.

Celebrate at home or locally

Of course, if you do not drive, you cannot be in a car accident. If possible, plan to have a party at your house or somewhere close. The less time you spend on the streets during the holiday, the safer you and your family will be.

Tweak the timing of your trip

If you are going out of town for the holiday, you can strategize to avoid the most dangerous times on the road. It is ideal to travel on the days before and after July 4 instead of on the day itself. Avoid driving at night as much as you can, since this is when most drunk drivers are on the roads.

Take preventative measures

Making sure your vehicle is in good shape goes a long way to keeping you and your passengers safe. At the very least, you should check your tire pressure, oil level and coolant level. You may want to have a mechanic check out your car before a long trip too.

Minimize distractions

Of course, everyone knows that using a phone while driving is dangerous, but that is not the only distraction to avoid. Family disputes, loose items and loud radios can also be distracting. While you may not be able to control the rowdiness of your passengers, do everything you can to be as alert as possible.
