White collar case involves Florida bank

We read recently of a case that has a classic good news/bad news component to it. The good news is that felony and misdemeanor charges were dropped against a man. The bad news is that the charges were dropped because he has been sentenced to five years and five months in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud.

The case in question extends all the way from Florida to Minnesota. The bank is in Florida, while the man is in Minnesota.

The 25-year-old man was pulled over in the Minneapolis suburb of Coon Rapids back in 2013. At the time, he had a felony warrant out. After he was pulled over, police officers found marijuana in the vehicle as well as payroll checks totaling more than $10,000. The checks were for a Pensacola company. Police said they also found a box of blank checks in the vehicle.

After law enforcement officials contacted the Florida firm, they learned that the checks were counterfeit and had been written on an account that had been closed a few days earlier because of fraudulent withdrawals.

The man apparently admitted to police officers that he was to deliver the checks, which he knew were counterfeit.

According to a newspaper article, the man has had a couple of non-appearances for court dates related to the charges.
