Staying safe around angry drivers

With the winter weather fast approaching, you may experience more delays due to the increased amount of traffic from snowbirds flocking to the area. With the crowds comes an increased risk of accidents, and one factor that often pops up in such frustrating conditions is road rage.

Understandably, there are many reasons why some motorists become aggressive when driving. Losing patience with other drivers and being late because of traffic are just two reasons that a motorist may start speeding, running red lights and tailgating. When these aggressive behaviors turn into road rage, they endanger everyone.

To ensure you have safe travels this season, consider the following pointers on avoiding accidents with angry motorists.

Keep emotions in check

You cannot control what other drivers do, but you can control your reaction so it does not cause any road rage situations you encounter to escalate. Anticipate traffic delays, weather conditions and other issues that may crop up, so you can plan your trips accordingly and remain calm while you are in the driver’s seat.

Move away from angry motorists

To avoid attracting the attention of a driver who is on edge, or who has already lost control, watch for signs of road rage such as shouting, erratic driving performance, or some other potentially dangerous signs that indicate anger may be an issue. Do not make eye contact, and focus on getting away quickly and safely.

Contact the authorities

Targeting could become an issue in some circumstances. If you feel an aggressive driver is targeting you, find somewhere safe to pull over, preferably a busy parking lot where witnesses may deter the driver from following you and escalating things. Contact the police to inform them of the situation. Provide a complete description of the motorist, the vehicle and license plate information.
