How can you make reentry successful for your child?

Watching your child work through the legal system after committing a juvenile crime can cause unrest and concern as a parent. Perhaps your highest priority is to help your child reenter society successfully.

Deterring your child from continued criminal conduct requires ongoing support and unconditional love. Knowing some of the ways to facilitate your child’s re-entry into society can help you confront any challenges with determination and confidence.

Education

Your child may lack awareness about how his or her behavior directly affects other people. Your child may also feel unable to express or control emotions as a result of past traumas. Even if you have done your best as a parent, your child may not have the knowledge of how to effectively cope with stress or peer pressure.

One of the best things you can do is to provide your child with education and opportunities to practice new skills. Teaching moments can come in the home and with the help of rehabilitative therapy or counseling. With interventions customized to your child’s needs, you can facilitate learning and use education to encourage your child to change bad habits.

Support

According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, a successful transition from detention to society requires your assistance and support. Inform family and friends of your child’s situation and ask them to help you reinforce positive behavior. Encourage everyone to express their love and support. Give your child opportunities to participate in activities and interact with peers.

Maintain open communication with your child and listen willingly to concerns. Remind your child that you are a team. Make goals together and encourage your child to verbalize aspirations for the future. With adequate support and education, your child may feel incentivized to act responsibly and civilly. Your ability to provide a consistent and stable routine may greatly reduce opportunities for negative behavior to happen again.
