Learning that you will need to install an ignition interlock device in your vehicle may initially make you upset. You may feel as though your privacy and your freedom have taken a hit.

However, an ignition interlock device actually has quite a few advantages. Seeing its value may improve your attitude and help you to realize its full benefit from the start.

Prevent alternative consequences

The outcome of a DUI could vary depending on whether or not this is your first offense. Factors including whether or not you had underaged passengers, whether or not your decision caused injury to others and whether or not you caused property damage can also influence your consequences. A DUI could cause a number of outcomes including the following:

  • Impounded vehicle
  • Jail time
  • License suspension
  • Increase of insurance premium

While an ignition interlock device may not prevent all of these outcomes, having an interlock device may prevent you from having to deal with other consequences. Considering that not having one would mean you could not drive at all, having one can actually help you maintain your freedom. If you have concerns about affording a device, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles says that in some circumstances, you can petition for an exception to make the product more affordable.

Support responsible habits

The consequences of DUI grow substantially with every subsequent offense. An ignition interlock device can support your effort to establish responsible habits and prevent recidivism. Knowing that your actions will determine whether or not you can continue driving may incentivize you to obey the law. With consistent use of an interlock device, you may find the temptation to drive after you drink to gradually subside.
