Florida has strict Driving Under the Influence or DUI laws and penalties. Many people do not know that there are various types of DUIs under Florida Law.

DUIs do not only involve cars. They can involve riding:

  • A horse
  • A bicycle
  • A golf cart
  • A motorcycle

You can get a DUI or similar charge on almost any form of conveyance.

Commercial driver’s license DUI

Florida is very severe when commercial drivers get DUIs. You can lose your commercial license for a year on your first offense, and you can lose it permanently on your second offense. Also, instead of the standard legal limit of 0.08, commercial divers can face penalties for a blood alcohol level of 0.04.

Felony DUI

A felony DUI usually involves grave or fatal injury to another person or multiple DUI convictions. Some felony DUIs are:

  • An accident resulting in bodily harm
  • DUI manslaughter and DUI manslaughter hit and run
  • Vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter hit and run

These involve serious penalties, such as jail time and heavy fines.

Misdemeanor DUI

Misdemeanor DUI is the most common type of DUI in Florida. It only applies to non-fatal accidents that involve property damage or minor injuries.

Suspended license DUI

A suspended license DUI happens when you are driving while your license is already suspended for a DUI. Usually, driving while your license is under suspension results in jail time. The penalties for multiple infractions increase in severity with each infraction.

In any case, taking a cab home or having a designated driver is much easier than risking a DUI and the penalties that go with it in Florida.
