Good People Do Get Arrested

Fort Myers drug arrest begins on the road

| Oct 5, 2016 | Drug Crimes

A recent arrest began as so many do: with a traffic stop. According to a news report by CBS affiliate WINK TV, detectives assigned to Lee County Sheriff’s Office Highway Interdiction Unit pulled two vehicles over for traffic infractions yesterday.

The Ford F350 and Cadillac SUV had been heading southbound on Interstate 75 when the drivers heard sirens and saw police lights and pulled over. Detectives later reported finding more than 94 pounds of marijuana in the Ford, while a search of the SUV revealed another 14 grams of cannabis and $6,000.

Law enforcement personnel apparently conducted searches of both vehicles after police dogs were used to sniff the truck and SUV. The dogs reportedly alerted the detectives to the presence of narcotics in the vehicles, the news report stated.

A search of the truck led to the discovery of boxes containing 94.4 pounds of marijuana. A search of the Cadillac revealed the additional cannabis and cash. A later search in Naples uncovered 5 pounds of marijuana and firearms.

A 23-year-old man was arrested for trafficking more than 25 pounds of marijuana. A woman, 46, and her son, 28, were arrested for conspiracy to traffick more than 25 pounds of marijuana as well as possession of less than 20 grams.

A criminal defense attorney would certainly want to know why the detectives pulled the two vehicles over and would want details of the events leading up to the searches and of the searches themselves.
