Florida driver charged with DUI and child endangerment

| Feb 27, 2019 | DUI

Exposing children to the risks of being in a vehicle with an impaired driver could have severe consequences. Florida courts have no tolerance for adults who are arrested for endangering the lives of children. One such driver will likely be exploring his defense options after a recent arrest on charges that include DUI, child neglect, resisting arrest and some controlled substance-related charges.

According to a police report, a call was received from a person who reported seeing a driver who appeared impaired, passed out or sleeping at the wheel of a car that also had two minor occupants. The caller managed to wake the sleeping driver, who promptly drove off at a high level of speed, alleged to have exceeded 100 mph. Further reports indicate that law enforcement caught up with the 28-year-old driver, who allegedly ignored their attempts to pull him over.

Deputies say the driver appeared to pull over at one stage but attempted to drive off again. An officer then managed to remove the key from the ignition and activate the emergency brake. More deputies arrived, and the resisting driver was taken into custody. Deputies claim to have seized a number of Tramadol tablets from the car. The children, who were allegedly not restrained, were placed in another person’s care.

Florida drivers who face DUI-related charges will likely secure the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. It is important to note that anyone who is arrested on criminal charges will remain innocent in the eyes of the law until, and if, the prosecution proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Charges in many cases have been reduced or even dropped, and the lawyer will work to achieve the best possible outcome for the client.
